Just after the war started arguments put forward by Reg Groves and the leaders of the No Conscription League had an effect on Bill and he put in a political conscientious objection. The tribunal of course rejected it, and he was later called up for the RAF as a wireless operator. Just the job for someone with a perforated ear drum. He was discharged after six months.
